Based on 600 average refuse stops for automated rural route:

  • Drivers exit truck 5% of the stops - 30 times to pick up either cart tip overs or wind-blown litter that has exited the cart or truck body

  • Average time spent per truck exit is 3 minutes (Some cases much longer) 3 minutes X 30 truck exits = 90 minutes per day

  • 1.5 hours per day x 5 days per week = 7.5 hours weekly picking up cart tip overs and wind-blown litter that has existed the cart or truck body

Based on 1,000 average refuse stops for automated dense inner-city route:

  • Average time spent per truck exit is 3 minutes (Some cases much longer) 3 minutes X 50 truck exits = 150 minutes per day

  • 2.5 hours per day x 5 days per week = 12.5 hours weekly picking up cart tip overs and windblown litter that has existed the cart or truck body

  • 12.5 hours @ $25.00 per hour = $312.50 in wages per week lost per route

  • 1,000 stops x 1 SafeWaste auto-release cart lid latch @ $3.50= $3,500

  • 1,000 SafeWaste auto-release cart lid latches would be paid for in the first 11.2 weeks

  • Savings of $16,250 per year, per route

The above annual cost saving will increase substantially when servicing lighter less compactable recyclables.

This data does not address the positive impact and savings regarding Workmen’s Compensation, with drivers not having to exist the truck slipping and falling on snow and ice and the additional injuries resulting from chasing down, brooming and shoveling of wind-blown litter.

This data also does not address the positive impact and savings regarding Driver turnover reduced by happier healthier drivers.

Insurance companies may offer discounts because drivers are existing trucks less often and staying out of the line of traffic.
